Important Days in April (India)

Odisha (then Orissa) was formed as a separate province on April 1, 1936, making it the first province in British India to be carved out purely on a linguistic basis. It was separated from the Bihar and Orissa Province. Utkal Divas (Utkal Day) is celebrated on April 1 every year. Bhubaneswar is Odisha's capital.

CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) Raising Day is officially observed on April 19 because the CRPF Act was passed on April 19, 1949, establishing the force's legal framework. The force was originally raised as the Crown Representative's Police on July 27, 1939. It is India's largest paramilitary force, with about 3.5 lakh personnel.

Siachen Glacier, at approximately 5,400 metres elevation, is in Ladakh near the Karakoram Range — where India, Pakistan, and China converge. It is the world's highest battlefield. Operation Meghdoot (April 13, 1984) pre-empted a Pakistani attempt to occupy the area. India has maintained continuous presence since then — making it one of the world's most challenging military deployments.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar served as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of India's Constitution, making him often called the 'Father of the Indian Constitution.' Born on April 14, 1891, he was also India's first Law Minister, an economist (two PhDs — Columbia and LSE), a jurist, and champion of Dalit rights. He is revered as 'Babasaheb.' April 14 is now a national holiday.

Baisakhi (April 13/14) marks the founding of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Anandpur Sahib on Vaisakhi 1699. It is also a harvest festival in Punjab and Haryana. Tragically, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre (April 13, 1919) occurred on Baisakhi when thousands had gathered to celebrate the festival, making the day also a day of sorrow.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), launched under the Ayushman Bharat scheme in September 2018, is the world's largest government-funded health insurance scheme. It provides health cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalization to over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families (approx. 50 crore beneficiaries).

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) was launched on October 2, 2014 (Gandhi Jayanti), by PM Narendra Modi. It aims to achieve universal sanitation coverage, eliminate open defecation, and improve solid waste management. Under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), nearly all Indian cities have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF). Launched on Mahatma Gandhi's 145th birth anniversary.

Civil Services Day is observed on April 21 because on this date in 1947, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel addressed the first batch of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers, calling them the 'Steel Frame of India.' He charged them to serve with integrity and commitment. April 21 was chosen to honour this founding address.

The Mahagujarat Movement (demanding a separate Gujarati state) and the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement (demanding a separate Marathi state) led to the bifurcation of Bombay State on May 1, 1960. 105 people were killed in the Samyukta Maharashtra agitation. The States Reorganisation Act (1956) had already reorganised most states but kept Bombay bilingual, leading to continued protests.

Rabindranath Tagore became the first Indian and first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, for his poetry collection 'Gitanjali' (Song Offerings). He also composed India's national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' and Bangladesh's national anthem 'Amar Shonar Bangla.' He was given the title 'Gurudev' by Gandhi.

The 73rd Constitutional Amendment (1992), which came into force on April 24, 1993, gave constitutional status to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). It added Part IX (Articles 243 to 243-O) and 11th Schedule to the Constitution. It mandated elections every 5 years, reservation for SC/ST and women (minimum 33%), and three-tier structure. April 24 is observed as National Panchayati Raj Day.

Odisha historically reported the highest number of malaria cases in India — contributing about 40% of India's total malaria cases and 50% of deaths at its peak. The state's tribal areas, forests, and water bodies create ideal mosquito breeding conditions. India has made significant progress through the National Framework for Malaria Elimination (NFME), targeting malaria-free status by 2027.

Lord Chelmsford (Frederic Thesiger, 3rd Baron Chelmsford) was the Viceroy of India at the time of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on April 13, 1919. General Reginald Dyer ordered the firing. Michael O'Dwyer, the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, was assassinated by Udham Singh in London in 1940 in revenge. Udham Singh shouted 'Inquilab Zindabad' in court.

National Maritime Day (April 5) commemorates the voyage of SS Loyalty — the first ship of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company (India's first national shipping company) — which sailed from Mumbai to London on April 5, 1919. It was a pioneering step in establishing Indian maritime trade independence from British shipping monopoly. The Scindia Company was founded by Walchand Hirachand.

Bohag Bihu (Rongali Bihu, mid-April) marks the Assamese New Year (Bohag is the first month of the Assamese calendar) and the beginning of the spring planting season. Bihu is celebrated three times a year: Rongali/Bohag (April), Kongali/Kati (October, when granaries are empty), and Bhogali/Magh (January, harvest celebration). Bihu dance and music are UNESCO-recognized.

India's first veterinary college — Lahore Veterinary School — was established in 1876 in Lahore (now in Pakistan). After Partition, the Punjab Veterinary College (now Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana) continued the tradition. India's veterinary education expanded significantly post-independence with institutions like IVRI (Indian Veterinary Research Institute) in Bareilly.

Ajmer in Rajasthan hosts Mayo College (founded 1875), often called the 'Eton of India' — India's oldest residential public school. Pune is sometimes called the 'Oxford of the East' for its educational institutions. Varanasi (Banaras) is the 'City of Learning.' Dehradun has The Doon School (1935). April sees many school/college examinations, giving educational trivia relevance.

AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) is a separate Ministry of India, carved out of the Health Ministry in 2014. India has over 2 lakh registered homeopathic doctors and 50+ homeopathic medical colleges. India is a world leader in practising and promoting homeopathy. The Ministry also oversees the Ayushman Bharat AYUSH schemes.

April 14 is Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's birth anniversary (born April 14, 1891, in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh). The day is observed as a national holiday called 'Ambedkar Jayanti' or 'Bhim Jayanti.' His conversion to Buddhism occurred on October 14, 1956, in Nagpur — Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Din — where he led 500,000 followers in embracing Buddhism.

India has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 under the Paris Agreement. India's NDC also includes targets to achieve 50% cumulative electric power from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 and reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 45% from 2005 levels by 2030. India is one of the few G20 nations on track to meet its Paris commitments.
