Important Days in December (India)

The Border Security Force (BSF), raised on December 1, 1965, primarily guards India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh — totalling over 6,385 km. The India-China border is guarded by the ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police). The India-Nepal and India-Bhutan borders are guarded by the SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal). BSF is the world's largest border guarding force.

Nagaland was formed on December 1, 1963, following the 16-Point Agreement (1960) between the Government of India and the Naga People's Convention (NPC), to address the Naga insurgency. Nagaland Day is observed on December 1. Kohima is Nagaland's capital. December 1 is significant — it's also World AIDS Day, and both BSF Raising Day and Nagaland Day share this date.

The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare implements the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP). India's NACP was launched in 1987 — making India the first developing country to initiate a national AIDS control effort. Since then, India has significantly reduced HIV prevalence. The NACO Targeted Intervention Programme focuses on high-risk groups.

During Operation Trident (December 4/5, 1971), Indian Navy Vidyut-class missile boats (INS Nipat, INS Nirghat, INS Veer) attacked Karachi harbour. They sank PNS Khaibar (destroyer), PNS Venus (minesweeper), and hit several oil tankers and fuel storage facilities. This was the first use of anti-ship missiles in combat in Asia. Operation Python (December 8–9) followed, causing more damage to Karachi.

PNS Ghazi, Pakistan's first submarine (formerly USS Diablo), was sunk on December 3–4, 1971, near Visakhapatnam (Eastern Command of the Indian Navy). It was lost to an explosion (cause disputed — internal explosion or Indian depth charges from INS Rajput). The wreck of PNS Ghazi lies at the bottom of the Bay of Bengal at about 800 feet. About 93 Pakistani sailors perished.

The Instrument of Surrender was signed in Dhaka (then Dacca) on December 16, 1971, by Pakistani General A.A.K. Niazi to Indian Army General J.S. Aurora, in the presence of Indian Air Marshal D'La Fontaine and Navy Rear Admiral S.N. Kohli. About 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered — the largest since World War II. The state of Bangladesh was born.

Armed Forces Flag Day (December 7) has been observed since 1949 to collect funds from the public for the welfare of war heroes, martyrs' families, war widows, and disabled ex-servicemen. Small tricolour flags are sold to the public. The Armed Forces Flag Day Fund is administered by the Kendriya Sainik Board under the Ministry of Defence.

Goa was under Portuguese colonial rule for 451 years — from 1510 (Alfonso de Albuquerque captured Goa) to 1961. Operation Vijay (December 18–19, 1961) was a 36-hour joint operation by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force that liberated Goa, Daman, and Diu from Portuguese rule. PM Nehru ordered the operation after peaceful negotiations failed. Goa Liberation Day is December 19.

National Mathematics Day is observed on December 22 — the birthday of Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887–1920). PM Manmohan Singh declared it in 2012. Ramanujan was a self-taught mathematical genius from Tamil Nadu who made extraordinary contributions to number theory, infinite series, continued fractions, and mock theta functions. He collaborated with G.H. Hardy at Cambridge. He died at 32, having written over 3,900 results.

Kisan Diwas is observed on December 23 — the birthday of Chaudhary Charan Singh (1902–1987), India's fifth Prime Minister (July 1979–January 1980). Known as the 'Champion of Peasants,' he enacted the UP Zamindari Abolition Act (1951), which gave landowners more security. He founded the Bharatiya Lok Dal party. Kisan Diwas highlights the contribution of farmers to India's economy.

Good Governance Day is observed on December 25 — the birthday of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1924–2018). It was declared by the Government of India in 2014 to promote awareness about transparent and accountable governance. Vajpayee served as PM three times and was known for the 'Golden Quadrilateral' highway project, the 1998 Pokhran-II tests, and the Agra Summit with Pakistan.

The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 established the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to regulate matters related to consumer rights. Significantly, it brought e-commerce platforms, direct selling, and online marketplaces under its purview — a major update from the 1986 Act. It also provides for product liability (manufacturers liable for defective products) and introduced an online dispute resolution mechanism.

The States Reorganisation Commission (SRC, 1953–1955) was headed by Justice Syed Fazl Ali (Chairman), with H.N. Kunzru and K.M. Panikkar as members. It submitted its report on September 30, 1955. Based on its recommendations, the States Reorganisation Act (1956) came into force on November 1, 1956, reorganising India into 14 states and 6 Union Territories on linguistic lines.

India has the world's largest diaspora — approximately 32 million people of Indian origin (PIOs and NRIs) live outside India. Key destinations include the USA, UAE, Saudi Arabia, UK, Canada, and Australia. The Indian diaspora contributes significantly through remittances — India is the world's top remittance-receiving country, receiving about $100–125 billion annually (about 3% of GDP).

India's National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was established under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. It is a statutory body (not constitutional). The NHRC investigates complaints of human rights violations committed by state/central government officials. The Chief Justice of India (retired) heads the NHRC. State Human Rights Commissions (SHRCs) function at the state level.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) was established under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, to facilitate the implementation of energy efficiency policies. BEE runs programmes like the BEE Star Rating for appliances (helping consumers choose energy-efficient products) and the Perform Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme for industries. India targets 45% reduction in energy intensity by 2030.

The First Battle of Panipat was fought on April 21, 1526, between Babur (Mughal) and Ibrahim Lodi (Delhi Sultanate). Babur's victory established the Mughal Empire in India. The Second Battle of Panipat (November 5, 1556) saw Akbar (via Bairam Khan) defeat Hemu. The Third Battle of Panipat (January 14, 1761) saw Ahmad Shah Abdali defeat the Marathas. December is not a Panipat battle month.

The Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016, replaced the earlier Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995. The RPWD Act recognises 21 types of disabilities (up from 7), mandates 5% reservation in government jobs and 5% in higher education for persons with disabilities. It also includes provisions for social security, rehabilitation, and the rights of persons with benchmark disabilities (40%+ disability).

Mission Indradhanush (launched December 25, 2014) initially targeted 7 diseases but was expanded to cover 12 diseases (including rotavirus, pneumococcal, Japanese encephalitis, measles-rubella, and IPV in addition to the original 7 — BCG, DPT, OPV, Hepatitis B, Measles). Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) was launched in 2017 to reach children not covered by routine immunisation.

INS Vikrant (IAC-1 — Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 1) was commissioned by PM Narendra Modi on September 2, 2022, at Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kerala. It is India's largest warship ever (45,000 tonnes, 262 metres long) and the most complex defence manufacturing project in India's history. It can carry MiG-29K fighter jets and helicopters. The original INS Vikrant (1961–1997) played a key role in the 1971 war.
