Important Days in February (India)

The Indian Coast Guard was established on February 1, 1977, under the Coast Guard Act, 1978. It operates under the Ministry of Defence and is responsible for maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, and protection of India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Its motto is 'Vayam Rakshamah' (We Protect).

World Wetlands Day is observed on February 2 to mark the signing of the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) on February 2, 1971, in Ramsar, Iran. India has one of the highest numbers of Ramsar sites in Asia. Notable Indian Ramsar sites include Chilika Lake, Keoladeo National Park, and Loktak Lake.

World Cancer Day (February 4) is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), founded in 1933. The WHO supports it. India has a significant cancer burden, and the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) runs awareness and screening initiatives. Common cancers in India include mouth, breast, and cervical cancer.

February 13 is observed as National Women's Day in India to honour the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu (1879). She was the first Indian woman President of the Indian National Congress and the first woman Governor (of the United Provinces, now Uttar Pradesh) after independence. She was also a gifted poet.

The Kamasutra, written by Vatsyayana (around 4th century CE), is considered the world's oldest and most comprehensive treatise on love, relationships, and sexuality. It is far more than its popular perception — it covers four aims of Hindu life (dharma, artha, kama, moksha). This cultural heritage predates Western Valentine's traditions by centuries.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (1630–1680) founded the Maratha Empire, which at its peak covered much of the Indian subcontinent. He pioneered guerrilla warfare techniques and established a progressive civil rule. His birthday is celebrated with great fervour in Maharashtra. The date varies by the Hindu calendar but usually falls in February.

Arunachal Pradesh was formerly known as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA). It became a Union Territory in 1972 and a full state on February 20, 1987. It borders China (Tibet), Bhutan, and Myanmar and is often called the 'Land of the Rising Sun.' Mizoram was carved out of Assam and also became a state on February 20, 1987.

On February 21, 1952, students in Dhaka (then East Pakistan) were shot dead by Pakistani police for demanding Bengali (Bangla) as the state language alongside Urdu. This 'Language Movement' (Bhasha Andolan) inspired Bangladesh's independence in 1971. UNESCO declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day in 1999 to promote linguistic diversity.

Chandrashekhar Azad vowed that he would never be arrested (caught) alive by the British. He kept this vow to the end — when surrounded by British police at Alfred Park, Allahabad, on February 27, 1931, he fired until his last bullet, then shot himself to avoid capture. His name 'Azad' (Free) symbolised this pledge.

C.V. Raman discovered the Raman Effect on February 28, 1928 — inelastic scattering of light, where photons change their energy (and thus wavelength) when interacting with matter. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for this discovery. He was the first Asian and first non-white person to win a Nobel Prize in science.

The Union Budget presentation date was moved from the last working day of February to February 1 in 2017, under Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. This change was made to ensure that budget allocations are approved before the new financial year begins on April 1. Previously, the Railway Budget was presented separately but has been merged with the Union Budget since 2017.

Central Excise Day is observed on February 24 to mark the enactment of the Central Excise and Salt Act on February 24, 1944. The CBEC (Central Board of Excise and Customs) — now CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs) — observes this day. GST replaced excise duty in July 2017, but the day is still observed for historical significance.

All India Radio (Akashvani) has the motto 'Bahujan Hitaya, Bahujan Sukhaya' — derived from the Buddhist concept meaning 'For the benefit of many, for the happiness of many.' AIR was established in 1936 and broadcasts in 23 languages and 179 dialects. It reaches over 99% of India's territory and 99% of its population.

C.V. Raman made his historic discovery at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) in Calcutta (Kolkata) on February 28, 1928. IACS was the first research institute in Asia. Raman later moved to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, where he continued his research.

National Productivity Day (February 12) and National Productivity Week (February 12–18) are observed by the National Productivity Council (NPC), established in 1958 under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. NPC promotes productivity, quality, and innovation in Indian industry. It is affiliated with the Asian Productivity Organization (APO).

Lal Bahadur Shastri became India's second Prime Minister on June 9, 1964, after Nehru's death. Gulzarilal Nanda served as acting PM twice (after Nehru's death in 1964 and Shastri's death in 1966). Shastri's birth anniversary is October 2 — the same as Gandhi Jayanti. He gave the famous slogan 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan.'

As of 2026, no Indian woman has yet won the Nobel Prize in science. However, India has several pioneering women scientists: Janaki Ammal (botany), Asima Chatterjee (chemistry), Darshan Ranganathan (organic chemistry), and Dr. Tessy Thomas (known as 'Missile Woman of India' for her work on Agni missiles). This is a fact-based awareness question.

The Maha Kumbh Mela occurs once every 144 years (12 cycles of Purna Kumbh) at Prayagraj. The 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela held from January 13 to February 26, 2025, was expected to be one of the largest human gatherings in history with over 400 million visitors. Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain are the four Kumbh Mela venues.

Kiran Bedi became India's first woman IPS (Indian Police Service) officer in 1972 when she joined the service. She was known for her reforms at Tihar Jail in Delhi (calling it 'Tihar Ashram') in the 1990s. She was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1994 for government service. She later served as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

'Sarva Dharma Sambhava' (Equal respect for all religions) is most closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of religious pluralism and nonviolence. Gandhi held prayer meetings that included prayers from all major religions. The concept is enshrined in India's secular democratic framework. Swami Vivekananda's Chicago speech (1893) similarly promoted religious harmony.
