National Doctor's Day is observed on July 1 to honour Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (Dr. B.C. Roy) — a physician, statesman, and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. He was born on July 1, 1882, and died on July 1, 1962 — the only person in history to die on their birthday at age 80. He received the Bharat Ratna in 1961. The MCI awards the BC Roy National Award to eminent medical persons.

India's GST has 4 main tax slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% — plus an exempt (0%) category. Essential items like food grains are exempt; luxury and demerit goods attract 28% (often with a cess). GST replaced around 17 different central and state taxes. The GST Council, chaired by the Finance Minister, decides tax rates. It is a dual GST model (CGST + SGST/IGST).

Van Mahotsav (literally 'Festival of Trees') was initiated in 1950 by K.M. Munshi (Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi), who was the Union Minister of Food and Agriculture. The week-long annual event encourages tree planting across India. India plants hundreds of millions of trees during this week to increase green cover and combat climate change.

India's population surpassed 1.44 billion in 2023, overtaking China to become the world's most populous country. India is projected to remain the most populous nation through 2100. The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of India has declined to 2.0 (replacement level), with southern states achieving below-replacement fertility. The next Census of India is expected in 2025–2026.

Gandhi led multiple campaigns in South Africa (1893–1915): the Natal Indian Congress (1894), the Satyagraha against the 'Black Act' (1907–1908, Transvaal), and the 'Great March' (1913) against the £3 poll tax and immigration restrictions. His South African experiences shaped his philosophy of nonviolent resistance (Satyagraha). He returned to India in January 1915.

The Kargil War lasted approximately 60 days — from the detection of Pakistani intrusions in May 1999 (May 3) to India's declaration of victory on July 26, 1999. Indian Army, along with the Air Force (Operation Safed Sagar), recaptured strategic peaks along the Line of Control. Over 500 Indian soldiers were martyred. Captain Vikram Batra's 'Yeh Dil Maange More' became iconic.

Income tax was first introduced in India on July 24, 1860, by Sir James Wilson (Finance Minister of British India) as a temporary measure to finance the British government after the 1857 revolt. The Income Tax Act, 1922, gave it a permanent framework. The current Income Tax Act, 1961, governs direct taxation in India. Income Tax Day (July 24) marks the 1860 introduction.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam collapsed while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM Shillong) on July 27, 2015, and was declared dead. He was 83 years old. He had just finished the first line of his lecture on 'Creating a Liveable Planet Earth.' He served as India's 11th President (2002–2007) and is revered as the 'Missile Man of India.'

'Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it' is the famous slogan attributed to Bal Gangadhar Tilak. He was a key leader of the Lal-Bal-Pal trio (Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal). He started the Ganesh Chaturthi public festival (1893) and Shivaji Jayanti to unite people. He was called 'Lokmanya' (revered by the people). He died on August 1, 1920 — the same day the Non-Cooperation Movement was launched.

Bhagat Singh was a key member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), co-founded by Chandrashekhar Azad (and originally by Ram Prasad Bismil as HSRA). Major HSRA actions included the assassination of British officer J.P. Saunders (1928, to avenge Lala Lajpat Rai's death), the Assembly bombing (1929, by Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt), and the Lahore Conspiracy Case.

India's Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) includes the Hepatitis B vaccine as a birth dose (given within 24 hours of birth) and at 6, 10, and 14 weeks as part of the Pentavalent vaccine (DPT+HepB+Hib). India has one of the world's largest immunisation programmes, reaching over 26 million children annually. The Hepatitis B vaccination has significantly reduced childhood transmission.

Project Tiger was launched on April 1, 1973, by PM Indira Gandhi, with Jim Corbett National Park as the first tiger reserve. From about 1,800 tigers in 1972, India's tiger population has recovered to over 3,167 (2022 Census) — the highest in the world. India has 55 Tiger Reserves covering over 75,000 sq km. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) oversees the programme.

The CRPF was originally raised as the 'Crown Representative's Police' on July 27, 1939, to assist the political department (representing the Crown) in maintaining law and order in the princely states. After independence, it was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) under the CRPF Act, 1949. Its raising day is commemorated on July 27.

The 2022 All India Tiger Estimation (using camera traps and pugmark analysis) counted approximately 3,167 tigers in India — the highest ever counted, making India home to more than 75% of the world's wild tigers. Madhya Pradesh leads with the most tigers, followed by Karnataka, Uttarakhand, and Maharashtra. India's tiger conservation is a global success story.

The 44th Constitutional Amendment (1978), enacted by the Janata Party government after the Emergency, changed the grounds for declaring a National Emergency from 'internal disturbance' to 'armed rebellion' (Article 352). It also required a special majority (2/3 of members present and voting) of both Houses to pass the Emergency proclamation, and added safeguards against its misuse.

The Panchsheel Agreement (Agreement on Trade and Intercourse between Tibet Region of China and India) was signed on April 29, 1954. The five principles are: (1) Mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, (2) Non-aggression, (3) Non-interference, (4) Equality and mutual benefit, (5) Peaceful coexistence. PM Nehru and Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai promoted Panchsheel, but the 1962 Sino-Indian War undermined it.

India's first radio broadcasting station was established in Mumbai (Bombay) in June 1923 as the Radio Club of Bombay. In July 1927, the 'Indian Broadcasting Company' started operations in Bombay and Calcutta. All India Radio (AIR) was formally established in 1936 when the Broadcasting from India Act came into force, and it was renamed 'Akashvani' (Voice from the sky) in 1957.

Sanjay Gandhi championed a coercive sterilisation (vasectomy) programme during the Emergency (1975–77) as part of the family planning drive — targeting men from lower socioeconomic groups and minority communities. About 8 million sterilisations were performed in a single year. The backlash against this programme was a key factor in Congress's defeat in the 1977 elections.

The national flag of India has an official ratio of 3:2 (length to width). The Ashoka Chakra (navy blue wheel) at the centre has 24 spokes. The Flag Code of India, 2002, governs display of the national flag. As per the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign (2022), citizens can display the national flag on their homes on Independence Day. The flag must be made of handspun/handwoven khadi.

Multiple laws address human trafficking in India: the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (ITPA), 1956, covers sex trafficking; POCSO (2012) covers child sexual exploitation; the IPC Sections 370 and 370A (2013 amendment) criminalise all forms of trafficking. The Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill, 2018, was a comprehensive law passed by Lok Sabha but lapsed. The Anti-Trafficking law remains a work in progress.
