Important Days in June (India)

Telangana became India's 29th state on June 2, 2014, carved out of the northwestern region of Andhra Pradesh. It was the result of decades of the Telangana statehood movement. Hyderabad serves as the shared capital of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for 10 years. K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) became Telangana's first Chief Minister.

India launched the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) in 2008 under PM Manmohan Singh. It has eight National Missions covering solar energy, energy efficiency, sustainable habitat, water, Himalayan ecosystem, green India, sustainable agriculture, and strategic knowledge. India is also a signatory to the Paris Agreement (2015) and the Kyoto Protocol.

Operation Blue Star (June 1–8, 1984) was a military operation ordered by PM Indira Gandhi to evict Sikh militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale who had fortified the Golden Temple complex (Harmandir Sahib), Amritsar. The operation killed Bhindranwale but also caused significant civilian and military casualties. It led to Indira Gandhi's assassination on October 31, 1984.

India's National Blood Policy (2002) mandates a shift to 100% Voluntary Non-Remunerated Blood Donation (VNRBD). While India still partially relies on replacement donation (family/friends donating for a patient), the National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC) works to achieve full voluntary donation. India needs about 15 million units annually and collects about 14 million.

PM Narendra Modi proposed International Yoga Day in his address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014. The UN passed the resolution on December 11, 2014 — with record support (177 co-sponsors). The first International Yoga Day was observed on June 21, 2015. June 21 is the summer solstice — the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere.

UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) is the UN agency mandated to protect refugees globally. India is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention or its 1967 Protocol but hosts refugees from Tibet, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Myanmar. India deals with refugee matters through domestic laws and bilateral agreements.

Article 42 (Directive Principles of State Policy) directs the state to make provision for securing just and humane conditions of work and for maternity relief — covering family welfare. The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017, extended paid maternity leave to 26 weeks in India (one of the longest globally). Paternity leave is still not mandated for private sector employees.

India has a coastline of approximately 7,516 km (including islands — primarily the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, the total is about 11,098 km). India's mainland coastline borders nine states: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways manages maritime affairs.

The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2016, prohibits employment of children below 14 years in all occupations (not just hazardous). It also prohibits adolescents (14–18 years) from working in hazardous occupations. The Right to Education Act (2009) has helped — school enrollment has improved, reducing child labour incidence. India had about 10 million child labourers as per Census 2011.

Tamil Nadu historically led India in installed wind energy capacity, with the Muppandal Wind Farm (Kanyakumari district) being one of Asia's largest. As of recent years, Gujarat has been challenging Tamil Nadu's top position. India has a total wind energy capacity of over 45,000 MW (as of 2024) and aims for 140 GW of wind energy by 2030.

Operation Flood (1970–1996) — also known as the White Revolution — was the world's largest dairy development programme, led by Dr. Verghese Kurien (known as the 'Father of the White Revolution' and 'Milkman of India'). It transformed India from a milk-deficient nation into the world's largest milk producer through the AMUL cooperative model. Kurien founded the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).

Guru Arjan Dev Ji — the fifth Sikh Guru and compiler of the Adi Granth (Guru Granth Sahib) — was martyred by Mughal Emperor Jehangir on May 30, 1606 (some sources say June 16). He was tortured and executed for refusing to remove verses considered offensive by Jehangir. He was the first Sikh Guru to achieve martyrdom and is revered as the 'First Shaheed' in Sikh tradition.

The Emergency (June 25, 1975 – March 21, 1977) was declared by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on the advice of PM Indira Gandhi under Article 352 of the Constitution (National Emergency on grounds of internal disturbance). Fundamental Rights were suspended, press was censored, and thousands were jailed under MISA. It ended when the Janata Party won the 1977 elections.

Approximately 30% of India's geographical area (about 97 million hectares) is affected by desertification or land degradation, as per the Desertification and Land Degradation Atlas of India. The Thar Desert (Rajasthan) is India's largest desert. India committed to achieving land degradation neutrality by 2030 as part of its NDC under the Paris Agreement.

The Uttarakhand High Court declared the Ganges (Ganga) and Yamuna rivers as 'living entities' with legal rights in March 2017 — though this was later stayed by the Supreme Court. New Zealand's Whanganui River (2017) and Ecuador's constitution (2008) also recognize nature's rights. India's Ganga Action Plan, NAMAMI Gange, and NGT rulings reflect growing recognition of river rights.

The English word 'Juggernaut' (an unstoppable force) derives from 'Jagannath' — the massive chariot (Rath) of Lord Jagannath drawn during the annual Rath Yatra in Puri. European travellers were awed by the enormous chariots pulled by thousands of devotees. Lord Jagannath (a form of Vishnu/Krishna) is the presiding deity of Puri's famous 12th-century temple.

National Reading Day is observed on June 19 — the birthday of P.N. Panicker (1909–1995), known as the 'Father of Library Movement in Kerala.' He founded the Kerala Grandhasala Sangham and promoted public library development across Kerala. S.R. Ranganathan (of Colon Classification fame) is the father of library science in India. National Reading Month is observed from June 19 to July 18.

India has approximately 5,000 IAS officers in service (against a sanctioned strength of ~6,500+). They are recruited through the UPSC Civil Services Examination (regarded as one of the world's toughest competitive exams) and trained at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie. They serve as district collectors, secretaries, and heads of ministries.

National Statistics Day is observed on June 29 — the birth anniversary of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (1893–1972), who founded the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI, 1931) and developed the Mahalanobis distance in statistics. He played a key role in formulating India's Second Five-Year Plan and established the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO, now MoSPI).

Jawaharlal Nehru delivered the 'Tryst with Destiny' speech at the Constituent Assembly in New Delhi at the midnight of August 14–15, 1947 — the eve of India's independence. The speech began: 'Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge...' It is considered one of the greatest speeches in world history.
