Important Days in March (India)

National Defence Day is observed on March 3 to mark the establishment of the National Defence Fund (NDF) in 1963. The NDF provides financial support to the widows and dependents of defence personnel martyred in wars. It should not be confused with Army Day (January 15) or Armed Forces Flag Day (December 7).

National Safety Day (March 4) marks the founding of the National Safety Council (NSC) of India on March 4, 1966. Safety Week is observed from March 4 to 10. The NSC is an autonomous, non-profit body promoting occupational safety, health, and environmental protection across Indian industries.

The Nari Shakti Puraskar is India's highest civilian honour for women, awarded by the President of India on International Women's Day (March 8). It recognises women who have made exceptional contributions to society in areas such as science, social work, education, and sports. The award carries ₹2 lakh cash and a citation.

The CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) was established on March 10, 1969, under the CISF Act. It protects vital national assets: airports, nuclear power plants, space installations, government buildings, ports, and heritage monuments. It also runs the fire protection service at many of these locations.

Studies estimate that approximately 10–17% of India's population suffers from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). India has only about 4,000 nephrologists for 1.4 billion people — far below the global average. Ayushman Bharat covers kidney transplants. Diabetic nephropathy and hypertension are the leading causes of CKD in India.

Gandhi selected 78 trusted satyagrahis to accompany him on the Dandi March beginning March 12, 1930. The marchers walked 241 miles (388 km) over 24 days, reaching Dandi (Gujarat coast) on April 5, 1930. Gandhi made salt from the sea on April 6, breaking the British Salt Law and launching the Civil Disobedience Movement.

India's first ordnance factory — the Gun and Shell Factory — was established at Cossipore, Kolkata (then Calcutta) on March 18, 1802, by the British East India Company. India now has over 40 ordnance factories under the defence public sector undertakings (Defence PSUs, reorganised in 2021). Ordnance Factories Day is observed on March 18.

Delhi declared the House Sparrow as its State Bird in 2012 to raise awareness about its alarming decline in urban areas. The Nature Forever Society of India established World Sparrow Day (March 20) in 2010. The decline of sparrows in cities is attributed to loss of habitat, electromagnetic radiation from cell towers, and reduced insect availability.

Bihar was separated from Bengal Presidency on March 22, 1912, forming the province of 'Bihar and Orissa.' Bihar Day (Bihar Diwas) is celebrated on March 22 to mark this historic event. Odisha (then Orissa) was further separated from Bihar and Orissa Province in 1936. Patna is the capital of Bihar.

March 23 is observed as Martyrs' Day (Shaheed Diwas) to honour Bhagat Singh (23), Rajguru (22), and Sukhdev (24) — three revolutionary freedom fighters hanged at Central Jail, Lahore on March 23, 1931, for their role in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. Another Martyrs' Day (January 30) honours Gandhi's assassination.

India accounts for approximately 26% of global TB cases — the highest of any country. The National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) aims to eliminate TB by 2025 under the 'Nikshay Poshan Yojana.' India has a major challenge: drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB and XDR-TB). March 24 commemorates Robert Koch's 1882 announcement of the TB bacillus.

Rajasthan was formed through the integration of 22 princely states (Rajputana region) into one state, completed on March 30, 1949, when Maharaja Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur signed the merger agreement. The merger was facilitated by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and V.P. Menon over multiple phases (1948–1949). Rajasthan is India's largest state by area.

The Natyashastra by Bharata Muni (circa 200 BCE–200 CE) is India's foundational text on dramaturgy, music, and dance. It is often called the 'fifth Veda' and covers acting, stagecraft, makeup, music, and aesthetics. It defines the concept of 'Rasa' (emotional essence) — the nine primary emotions in Indian art (Navarasas).

Under the Gandhi-Irwin Pact (March 5, 1931), Gandhi agreed to attend the Second Round Table Conference in London and suspend the Civil Disobedience Movement. The British agreed to release political prisoners. However, Gandhi returned disappointed as the conference failed to agree on India's constitutional future, and the Civil Disobedience Movement was resumed in 1932.

As per the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023, India's total forest and tree cover is approximately 21.76% of the geographical area — about 8.27 lakh square km. India aims for 33% forest cover as per the National Forest Policy, 1988. The Northeast states (Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya) have the highest forest cover percentages.

The World Health Organization (WHO) officially certified India as polio-free on March 27, 2014, after three consecutive years without a wild polio case (last case in West UP in January 2011). India's success was remarkable given its population density and sanitation challenges. The 'Pulse Polio' campaign — 'Do Boond Zindagi Ki' — was crucial to this achievement.

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) in New Delhi is the highest level of consumer court in India, with jurisdiction over complaints valuing over ₹1 crore. Below it are State Commissions and District Forums. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 replaced the 1986 Act, adding e-commerce and online platforms within its scope.

The Parsi (Zoroastrian) community in India celebrates Nowruz (also called Navroz) as their New Year. India's Parsi community, concentrated mainly in Mumbai and Gujarat, is one of the smallest religious minorities (about 57,000) but has made disproportionate contributions in industry (Tata), law, and philanthropy. Nowruz is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Supreme Court of India was inaugurated on January 26, 1950 — the same day India became a Republic. It replaced the Federal Court of India. The first Chief Justice was Harilal Jekisundas Kania. The Supreme Court has original, appellate, and advisory jurisdiction, and its decisions are binding on all courts in India.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) was established in 1875, making it one of the oldest scientific departments of the Government of India. Its headquarters is in New Delhi (Safdarjung Airport). The IMD issues weather forecasts, cyclone warnings, and climate data. India is also a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
