Important Days in May (India)

Maharashtra and Gujarat were carved out of Bombay State on May 1, 1960. Maharashtra was formed for Marathi-speaking people and Gujarat for Gujarati-speaking people. This followed years of agitation — the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and the Mahagujarat Movement. May 1 is also International Labour Day (Workers' Day), making it a dual celebration.

Article 23 of the Indian Constitution prohibits traffic in human beings and forced labour (begar). Article 24 prohibits employment of children below 14 years in factories, mines, and hazardous employment. Labour rights fall under Part III (Fundamental Rights) of the Constitution. The 'Right against exploitation' (Articles 23–24) protects workers' dignity.

India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests (May 11–13, 1998) were codenamed 'Operation Shakti.' Five devices were tested under the scientific supervision of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and R. Chidambaram, with PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee giving the go-ahead. India also test-fired the Trishul missile and the Hansa-3 aircraft on May 11, leading PM Vajpayee to declare it National Technology Day.

India's first nuclear test, codenamed 'Smiling Buddha,' was conducted on May 18, 1974, under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The test was conducted at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. India called it a 'peaceful nuclear explosion.' It made India the sixth country in the world to test a nuclear device, alarming Western nations and Pakistan.

Goa became India's 25th state on May 30, 1987. Before that, it was a Union Territory (Goa, Daman and Diu) since its liberation from Portuguese rule in December 1961. The Goa, Daman and Diu Reorganisation Act, 1987, elevated Goa to statehood while Daman and Diu remained a Union Territory.

The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), established in 1920, is headquartered in New Delhi. It is an auxiliary to the government's humanitarian work, operating under the Indian Red Cross Society Act, 1920. The President of India is the ex-officio President of the IRCS. It has over 600 branches across India.

The Census of India 2011 showed the average household size was 4.8 persons per household — down from 5.4 in 2001, reflecting the trend toward nuclear families. India's joint family system (where multiple generations live together) is declining but still prevalent, especially in rural areas and among communities in states like Punjab, Haryana, and UP.

The National Museum of India is located in New Delhi, inaugurated on December 15, 1949. It holds over 2 lakh objects spanning 5,000 years of India's cultural heritage. India's oldest museum is the Indian Museum in Kolkata (est. 1814) — also the oldest and largest multipurpose museum in Asia. INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) protects cultural sites.

Anti-Terrorism Day is observed on May 21 — the anniversary of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991, at Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, by an LTTE suicide bomber (Thenmozhi Rajaratnam/Dhanu). He was campaigning for the general elections. Anti-Terrorism Day was established to promote awareness about the dangers of terrorism and violence.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is called the 'silent killer' because it often has no obvious symptoms but quietly damages the heart, kidneys, and blood vessels, leading to heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure. India has about 220 million hypertensive patients. The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, CVD and Stroke (NPCDCS) addresses hypertension.

The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act — COTPA, 2003 — is India's primary law regulating tobacco. It prohibits advertising, mandates health warnings covering 85% of cigarette packs, bans smoking in public places, and restricts sale near educational institutions.

India has 4 biodiversity hotspots: (1) Himalayas, (2) Indo-Burma region (Northeast India), (3) Western Ghats & Sri Lanka, and (4) Sundaland (includes Andaman & Nicobar Islands). These 4 hotspots cover about 2.5% of India's land area but are home to a disproportionately large share of India's endemic species. India is home to about 7–8% of the world's recorded species.

Rabindranath Tagore originally wrote 'Gitanjali' (Song Offerings) in Bengali. He himself translated it into English (with some changes), and this English version won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Tagore was a polymath — poet, playwright, composer, painter, and philosopher. He composed over 2,200 songs collectively known as Rabindra Sangeet.

Thalassaemia is a hereditary (genetic) blood disorder where the body produces insufficient or abnormal haemoglobin, leading to anaemia. India has about 10,000–15,000 Thalassaemia Major children born each year, adding to 1 lakh+ already affected. The Thalassaemia Control Programme under the National Health Mission focuses on prevention through carrier screening and counselling.

Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito (also called tiger mosquito). The Aedes mosquito also transmits Zika virus, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Dengue is a major public health concern in India — with seasonal outbreaks during and after the monsoon. India reports the highest number of dengue cases in Asia.

The Indian Nursing Council (INC), established in 1949 under the Indian Nursing Council Act, 1947, is India's regulatory body for nursing education and practice. It sets standards for nursing curricula, conducts examinations, and maintains the national register. India has a severe nurse shortage — about 3 million registered nurses for a population of 1.4 billion.

Chogyal (divine ruler) Palden Thondup Namgyal was the last ruler of the Kingdom of Sikkim. After a referendum on April 14, 1975, where 97% voted for merger with India, Sikkim formally became India's 22nd state on May 16, 1975. The institution of Chogyal was abolished. Gangtok is the state capital.

Chilika Lake in Odisha — Asia's largest coastal lagoon and India's first Ramsar site (1981) — is a critical wintering ground for migratory birds arriving via the Central Asian Flyway. Over 160 species of migratory birds visit Chilika each winter, including flamingos, grey pelicans, and bar-headed geese. It hosts about 1 million birds annually.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam led the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) from 1983 onwards, which developed India's five key missile systems: Prithvi (surface-to-surface), Agni (intermediate-range ballistic), Trishul (surface-to-air), Akash (surface-to-air), and Nag (anti-tank). He served as India's 11th President (2002–2007) and passed away on July 27, 2015.

'Matru Devo Bhava' (माता देवो भव) — 'Let your mother be your god' — from the Taittiriya Upanishad is one of India's most revered expressions of the mother-child relationship. The full shloka is 'Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava, Acharya Devo Bhava, Atithi Devo Bhava' — honouring mother, father, teacher, and guest as divine. This forms the basis of India's traditional values.
