National Days of India

Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 every year to mark the date in 1950 when India's Constitution came into force, replacing the Government of India Act 1935. The main parade is held at Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath) in New Delhi.

August 15, 1947 is when India gained independence from British rule. The Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and delivers the nation's address. It is one of India's three national holidays.

The United Nations declared October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence in 2007 to honour Mahatma Gandhi's birthday (1869) and his philosophy of non-violence. It is observed globally.

National Youth Day is celebrated on January 12, the birthday of Swami Vivekananda (born 1863). The Government of India declared it in 1984 to inspire youth with his teachings of self-reliance and service to humanity.

Parakram Diwas is observed on January 23 — the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (1897). The Government of India declared this day in 2021 to inspire citizens with his indomitable spirit and selfless service.

National Voters Day is observed on January 25 to commemorate the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (established January 25, 1950). It aims to encourage young voters to participate in the democratic process.

Martyrs' Day on January 30 marks the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948 by Nathuram Godse. A two-minute silence is observed across India at 11 AM. Another Martyrs' Day (March 23) marks the hanging of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev in 1931.

National Science Day is observed on February 28 to mark the announcement of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman in 1928. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for this discovery. The day promotes scientific temper in India.

National Technology Day is celebrated on May 11 to mark India's nuclear tests at Pokhran in 1998 (Operation Shakti). India also successfully test-fired the Trishul missile and the Hansa-3 aircraft on the same day. It was declared by PM Vajpayee.

National Sports Day is observed on August 29 — the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand (1905), the legendary hockey player known as the "Wizard of Hockey." The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (now Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna) award is presented on this day.

Teachers' Day is celebrated on September 5 — the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888), who was India's first Vice President and second President. When students wanted to celebrate his birthday, he suggested celebrating it as Teachers' Day instead.

Hindi Diwas is observed on September 14 because the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi written in Devanagari script as the official language of India on September 14, 1949. Article 343 of the Constitution designates Hindi as the official language.

Engineers' Day is celebrated on September 15 — the birthday of Sir M. Visvesvaraya (1861), the renowned Indian engineer and statesman who designed the flood protection system at Hyderabad. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955.

Children's Day in India is celebrated on November 14 — the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (1889), India's first Prime Minister who was fondly called "Chacha Nehru" by children. Before 1964, it was observed on November 20 (UN Universal Children's Day).

Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) is observed on November 26 because the Constituent Assembly of India formally adopted the Constitution of India on November 26, 1949. It came into force on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day.

National Mathematics Day is observed on December 22 — the birthday of the mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887). It was declared by PM Manmohan Singh in 2012. Ramanujan is known for contributions to number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.

Kisan Diwas is observed on December 23 — the birthday of Chaudhary Charan Singh (1902), India's fifth Prime Minister, who championed the cause of farmers. He served as PM from July 1979 to January 1980.

Good Governance Day is observed on December 25 — the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1924). It was instituted in 2014 to raise public awareness about accountability and transparency in governance.

National Education Day is observed on November 11 — the birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (1888), India's first Education Minister. He was instrumental in establishing institutions like IIT, IIM, AICTE, and UGC. He was also a great freedom fighter.

National Unity Day is observed on October 31 — the birthday of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875), the 'Iron Man of India.' It was instituted in 2014 to pay tribute to the man who united over 560 princely states into independent India.
