Important Days in November (India)

Tamil Nadu does not celebrate its foundation day on November 1. Tamil Nadu Day is observed on November 1 (when Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu in 1956), but Tamil Nadu was formally established as a linguistic state in 1956. However, the states formed on November 1 include Kerala (1956), Karnataka (1956, then called Mysore), Haryana (1966), Andhra Pradesh (renamed/reorganised from 1956), Chhattisgarh (2000), and Madhya Pradesh Day (Statehood Day).

Kerala was formed on November 1, 1956, by merging: (1) Travancore-Cochin state, (2) the Malabar district of Madras State, and (3) Kasargod taluk of South Canara (Dakshina Kannada) district. This unified all Malayalam-speaking areas under the States Reorganisation Act, 1956. Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) is the capital. Kerala Day (Kerala Piravi) is a state holiday.

Puducherry (Pondicherry) was a French territory transferred to India on November 1, 1954 (de facto transfer), although the legal transfer (de jure) was formalised in 1962. It is the largest French colonial settlement in India. Puducherry remains a Union Territory governed by the Lieutenant Governor. It also has areas in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (born November 11, 1888) was India's first Education Minister (1947–1958). He was instrumental in establishing the IITs (1951), IIMs, AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), UGC (University Grants Commission), Sangeet Natak Akademi, Sahitya Akademi, and Lalit Kala Akademi. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1992.

Before 1964, India observed Children's Day on November 20 — the UN Universal Children's Day. After Jawaharlal Nehru's death on May 27, 1964, Parliament decided to change Children's Day in India to November 14 — Nehru's birthday — to honour 'Chacha Nehru's' deep love for children. The UN Universal Children's Day (November 20) is still internationally observed.

All three states were formed within a 15-day period: Chhattisgarh (from Madhya Pradesh) on November 1, 2000; Jharkhand (from Bihar) on November 15, 2000; and Uttaranchal/Uttarakhand (from Uttar Pradesh) on November 9, 2000. Together they became states 26, 28, and 27 of India respectively. All three were formed from the Hindi heartland and represented demands by tribal/hill communities for self-governance.

November 15 coincides with the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda (1875–1900) — the revered tribal freedom fighter who led the 'Ulgulan' (Great Tumult) rebellion against British rule and the displacement of Adivasi communities. He is worshipped as 'Dharati Aaba' (Father of the Earth) by tribal communities. November 15 is also observed as 'Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas' (Tribal Pride Day) at the national level.

The Constituent Assembly had 299 members (after Partition reduced it from the original 389). Of these, 284 members signed the Constitution on November 26, 1949 (some had died or were absent). The Assembly met for 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (Drafting Committee Chairman) and Dr. Rajendra Prasad (President of the Assembly) were key figures.

The Preamble begins: 'We, the People of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic and to secure to all its citizens Justice, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity...' The words 'Socialist' and 'Secular' were added by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment (1976) during the Emergency. The Preamble is considered the 'soul' of the Constitution.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on November 15, 1469 (Kartik Purnima, 1469). The 555th Prakash Utsav was celebrated in 2024 (1469 + 555 = 2024). Kartarpura Corridor (connecting India's Dera Baba Nanak to Pakistan's Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib) was opened on November 9, 2019, to allow Indian Sikh pilgrims visa-free access to Guru Nanak's final resting place.

The Border Security Force (BSF) was raised on December 1, 1965, in the aftermath of the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War, to provide a dedicated, well-organised border protection force under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Before the BSF, various state armed police units guarded the borders — a weakness exploited during the 1965 war. K.F. Rustamji was the BSF's first Director General.

The Press Council of India was established on July 4, 1966, under the Press Council Act, 1965. It became operational on November 16, 1966 — which is why November 16 is observed as National Press Day. The Press Council serves as a self-regulatory body for print media, adjudicating complaints against newspapers and upholding press freedom and journalistic ethics.

Article 25 of the Indian Constitution guarantees freedom of conscience and the right to freely profess, practise, and propagate religion — subject to public order, morality, and health. Articles 26–28 cover rights of religious denominations, freedom from paying taxes for religious instruction, and protection from religious instruction in state-funded schools.

The Indira Gandhi National Integration Award (Rashtriya Ekta Puraskar) is awarded each year on November 19 by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust to individuals who have contributed to national integration and communal harmony. India also observes Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Integration Day) on her birthday. October 31 is the National Unity Day for Sardar Patel.

PM Narendra Modi declared rural India 'Open Defecation Free' (ODF) on October 2, 2019 (Gandhi Jayanti — 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi). Under Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural), over 10 crore toilets were built from 2014–2019 — the world's largest rural sanitation drive. The ODF declaration was a major public health milestone, expected to reduce diarrhoeal diseases.

The November 26–29, 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks were carried out by 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) from Pakistan. 166 people were killed and over 300 injured in coordinated attacks across 12 locations including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, CST station, and Nariman House (Chabad House). Ajmal Kasab was the sole surviving attacker, hanged in Pune on November 21, 2012.

India has approximately 12 million people with epilepsy — about one-sixth of the world's total epilepsy burden. Many cases remain undiagnosed or undertreated due to stigma and lack of awareness. The National Epilepsy Programme (NEP) under the National Health Mission aims to improve diagnosis and treatment. Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) are available under the Jan Aushadhi Scheme.

Dhanteras (Dhan Trayodashi) is the festival of wealth and prosperity — Dhan means wealth, Teras means thirteenth (lunar day). People buy gold, silver, and new utensils, believing it brings good luck. Lord Dhanvantari (physician of the gods, associated with Ayurveda) is worshipped, making it also a day for good health. It coincides with National Ayurveda Day.

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai (August 12, 1919 – December 30, 1971) is known as the 'Father of the Indian Space Programme.' He founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL, 1947) and was instrumental in establishing ISRO's predecessor — INCOSPAR (1962) and then ISRO (1969). The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram is named in his honour. He died suddenly at age 52.

Ayurveda's foundations are in two major texts: (1) Charaka Samhita (by Charaka — focusses on medicine/Kayachikitsa, estimated 400–200 BCE) and (2) Sushruta Samhita (by Sushruta — focusses on surgery/Shalya Tantra, estimated 600–300 BCE). Sushruta is considered the world's first surgeon — performing rhinoplasty 2,600 years ago. Ashtanga Hridayam (by Vagbhata) is the third major Ayurvedic text.
