Important Days in October (India)

The United Nations declared October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence in 2007, to honour Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of Ahimsa (non-violence). The resolution was proposed by India and co-sponsored by 140 countries. Gandhi's birthday is also observed as a dry day (no alcohol sales) in India and as a day for community service (Swachh Bharat).

'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer) was given by PM Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1965 to boost national morale during the Indo-Pakistan War. Later, PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee added 'Jai Vigyan' (1998) and PM Narendra Modi added 'Jai Anusandhan' (Hail Research, 2022). Shastri died mysteriously in Tashkent on January 11, 1966, a day after signing the Tashkent Declaration with Pakistan.

Potti Sriramulu fasted unto death from October 19, 1952, demanding a separate Telugu-speaking state. He died on December 15, 1952, after 58 days of fasting — triggering widespread protests. The government announced the formation of Andhra State on October 1, 1953. His sacrifice led to the States Reorganisation Commission (1953) and the reorganisation of all Indian states on linguistic lines by 1956.

The Indian Air Force was officially established on October 8, 1932, under the British Indian government as the Royal Indian Air Force. It dropped the 'Royal' prefix after India became a Republic in 1950. The IAF is the world's fourth-largest air force. Its motto is 'Nabha Sprusham Deeptam' (Touch the Sky with Glory) — a quote from the Bhagavad Gita.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was raised on October 24, 1962, following the Sino-Indian War (also called the 1962 Sino-Indian War or India-China War) to guard India's border with Tibet/China along the Himalayas. It is known as 'Himveers' (Heroes of the Himalayas). ITBP also provides disaster rescue services in the Himalayan region.

On October 21, 1959, 10 CRPF personnel were killed in a Chinese ambush at Hot Springs, Ladakh (then part of NEFA/disputed territory). They were unarmed for a diplomatic mission. This event — 3 years before the 1962 war — is considered the first Indian security force casualty at the hands of China. October 21 is observed as Police Commemoration Day (Police Martyrs Day) with wreath-laying ceremonies.

Maharaja Hari Singh was the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir when Pakistani-backed Pathan tribal raiders invaded in October 1947. He initially wanted independence but signed the Instrument of Accession to India on October 26, 1947, to seek military help. Indian Army troops were airlifted to Srinagar on October 27, 1947 — India's first military operation after independence.

The National Security Guard (NSG) was raised on October 16, 1984, following the assassination of PM Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 — a response to the growing terrorism threat. (Operation Blue Star in June 1984 also highlighted the need for a specialised counter-terrorism force.) Known as 'Black Cats,' the NSG handles hostage rescue, VIP protection, and bomb disposal. The 26/11 Mumbai attacks (2008) showcased NSG's operations.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is called the 'Iron Man of India' (also 'Bismarck of India') for his decisive role in integrating over 560 princely states into the Indian Union after independence. He served as India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. The 'Statue of Unity' — the world's tallest statue (182 metres) — was built in his honour in Gujarat and unveiled on October 31, 2018.

Indira Gandhi served as PM for two separate stints: (1) 1966–1977 (during which she led India to victory in the 1971 war and won the Bharat Ratna 1971, but also declared the Emergency in 1975), and (2) 1980–1984 (after the Congress returned to power). She was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984, following Operation Blue Star. She was India's only woman PM.

The Mysore Dasara tradition dates back to the Vijayanagara Empire (14th century), continued by the Wadiyar dynasty (Kingdom of Mysore). After the Mysore kingdom was merged into India in 1947, the state government continued the tradition. The Dasara procession (Jumboo Savari) features a golden throne and elephants. Mysuru Dasara is now a national festival of Karnataka.

Bhubaneswar (Odisha) was the top-ranked city in the first round of the Smart Cities Mission (2016) and is considered the first smart city project launched under the mission. The Smart Cities Mission (launched June 2015 by PM Modi) aims to develop 100 cities with smart technology, improved infrastructure, and better quality of life. The mission focuses on ICT, clean energy, and efficient transportation.

The National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, covers approximately 67% of India's population — 75% of rural and 50% of urban population. Beneficiaries receive 5 kg of foodgrain per month at heavily subsidised prices (₹1–3 per kg for rice, wheat, millets). This makes it the world's largest food security programme, covering about 81 crore people. The PDS (Public Distribution System) distributes food through ration shops.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) functions under the Ministry of Culture. Founded in 1861 by Alexander Cunningham, ASI is responsible for archaeological research and protecting India's cultural heritage. India has 3,693 centrally protected monuments (including the Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar, and Konark Sun Temple). India has 42 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (as of 2023).

Diwali primarily celebrates Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshmana after 14 years of exile and his victory over Ravana. Citizens lit lamps (diyas) to welcome him — the origin of the festival of lights. Diwali also coincides with Goddess Lakshmi Puja (goddess of wealth), Kali Puja (in Bengal), and marks the beginning of the new year for some communities (Gujarati New Year — Bestu Varas).

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister to visit Kashmir after its accession to India. He had deep emotional ties to Kashmir (as a Kashmiri Pandit himself). Nehru also decided to take the Kashmir issue to the United Nations Security Council in January 1948 — a decision later criticized for internationalising the conflict. The ceasefire of December 31, 1948, ended the first Kashmir War.

Mumbai's Dabbawalas (tiffin carriers) operate as an independent cooperative using a colour-coded and symbolic address system (not written text) that even illiterate dabbawala can read. They deliver approximately 2 lakh tiffin boxes per day with near-zero error rates. Harvard Business School has studied them as a model of logistics. They are a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage candidate.

The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 (replacing the Mental Health Act, 1987) is India's primary mental health legislation. It decriminalises suicide attempts (a significant reform), establishes mental health review boards in every state, and gives patients the right to make advance directives for their treatment. India has about 7,500 psychiatrists for 1.4 billion people — a major shortage.

As per NITI Aayog's Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2023, approximately 11.28% of India's population lives in multidimensional poverty — a significant decline from 29.17% in 2013–14 and 14.96% in 2019–21. India lifted about 24.82 crore people out of poverty in 9 years. The MPI considers 12 indicators including health, education, and living standards (not just income).

Mother Teresa (Albanian-Indian Catholic nun, 1910–1997) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her charitable work among the poor and sick through the Missionaries of Charity (founded 1950, Kolkata). Amartya Sen won the Nobel in Economics (1998). Kailash Satyarthi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 (jointly with Malala Yousafzai) for combating child labour. Tagore won Literature (1913). C.V. Raman won Physics (1930).
